The Waale in the Vinschgau – Intangible UNESCO World Heritage
The Vinschgau and Meran regions receive very little rainfall. To irrigate their fields, farmers built canals centuries ago, using them to water their fields, meadows, and pastures. The Waale are an important cultural heritage of the Vinschgau, and they can be easily seen when crossing the Reschen Pass near the village of St. Valentin. Along this route, you will also encounter another fascinating landmark: the tower of the sunken church in Graun, rising from the lake Reschen, which vividly symbolizes the region’s eventful history. The parallel paths, originally used for the maintenance and cleaning of the Waale, are now among the most popular hiking trails for walkers and families who wish to enjoy the flora and fauna of the Vinschgau.
